Calculate difference between two dates
With the help of this calculator, you can calculate the number of months between two dates falling in an identical year within a second. These type of calculation can be very useful in the businesses that are involved in construction and engineering projects that need to keep a track of the number of months, days between the starting and the ending date.
To calculate difference between two dates is very simple: just enter the dates, and the answer is calculated automatically with the formula provided in the template.
Case 1: When years are identical
- In order to calculate the number of months between two dates falling in an identical year you will need to mention the starting date in let’s suppose the cell A2 of the excel sheet and the ending date in the cell B2 of the excel sheet. You can find the number of months between these two mentioned days simply to get the answer in the cell C2 by using the MONTH function. By following these steps you can get your answer:
- Use the Month function in the Microsoft Excel to extract the month from each date and then proceed by subtracting the two month at the start and the end.
Case 2: When years are different
- Similarly when the numbers of months are required to be found between two dates that fall in different years, then the answer could be achieved by using both the MONTH and the YEAR function of the Excel office software.
- For instance, you write the start date in the cell A2 and the end date in the cell B2, in the C2 you can first use the YEAR function by selecting formulas in the tool bar from the excel software and apply it on both cells to extract the years and subtract them to get the difference in years, multiplying it with the digit 12, you will get the answer in months. Then apply the month function to find the difference in months between the both dates and subtract the starting month from the ending month to get the answer.
You can also find the date after adding number of months to another date. For instance if you have written the date in the cell A2 and the number of months you want to add in the cell B2, then in the cell C2 you can add the following formula: =MIN(DATE(YEAR(A2),YEAR(A2)+C2+1,0),DATE(YEAR(A2 ),MONTH(A2)+C2,DAY(A2)))
