8 Free APA Format Title Page Templates for Word
APA stands for American Psychological Association, the largest scientific and professional organization of psychologists in the United States. Many years ago, in 1929 a group of academic and business people decided to establish a set of rules that would work as a guide for academic authors. These rules were meant to make both creation and comprehension of academic documents easier, and to ensure that documents are consistent in style.
APA style handles many aspects of academic writing, including structure of research papers of various kinds, punctuations, abbreviations, presentation of data and tables, citation of author-date reference, formatting, and much more.
Students often don’t realize the importance of APA formatting and don’t spend enough time working on it. Small mistakes in the formatting can result in major point loss. It does happen quite often that a paper with fantastic content will get a C-grade because the author did not bother to fix simple formatting errors.
What about the title page format? There are strict rules about that too, and you should make sure you follow them.
How to make an APA title page
Typical APA title page will usually include the following elements:
- The running header
- The page number
- Title of Paper
- Author Name
- Institutional affiliation
Different institutions, departments, and professors within the same department or institution, might have different requirements about the APA style for title page, so make sure you always check with your professor since he or she will be the final authority on this matter.
For example, many professors will ask to include the following elements:
- Course Name or Number, or a class name
- Instructor’s name
- Due Date
These are the guidelines for the document formatting. Since APA-style title page is a part of your document, these rules apply to the title page.
- Times New Roman size 12 pt.
- You can use sans-serif fonts (i.e. Arial) for the tables, but don’t make the size smaller, the size must stay at 12pt.
- Double-spaced for all text lines of the document including title page.
- 1-inch margins at the top, bottom, right and left of every page.
- For paper text: left aligned.
- For APA-style title Page: center aligned.
Main Format elements
The title should be concise and clearly identify the specific topic of the paper. Capitalize main words in the title.

The running head is a shorter version of the title of the paper. It appears on every page of the paper and it includes the words “Running head” followed by a colon. Put document title after a colon, in all capital letters. It must not exceed 50 characters including spaces and punctuation. The words “Running head” should only appear on the title page.
Write down your name (first, middle, and last). If the paper was co-authored with other people, list all authors in the order of their contribution.
Each page is numbered consecutively, including title and reference pages. The first page number appears on title page, it will be 1; it must be right-aligned.
Name of the college, high-school, or university for which the paper has been written.
