Writing a professional resume is a mix of art and science. If you have an ample supply of professional skills and qualifications but are unable to present them properly, your job application may go straight into the paper recycle bin. A resume is your sales tool; it is your opportunity to introduce yourself in the best light and to obtain an interview for the position that you seek. An outstanding resume gets more than 50% of the job done, and you should never take the task of creating one casually.

The resume must be precise and specifically tailored to the type of job to which you are applying for. The primary objective of your resume is to communicate your key skills and strengths, as well as to demonstrate how the company you are applying to can benefit from them. For example, let us say that you are applying for a web developer position, and you have experience working as a waiter. Should you list that experience? If you have enough relevant experience, then there is no need to list the unrelated job experience. If your list of work experience is short however, you could include the waiter experience, and detail how it makes you a better and more qualified candidate for the position by explaining how you gained valuable tools relating to multi-tasking, perfect time management, and outstanding people skills.

What is a resume?

A resume is a document that lists objectives, education, qualifications, achievements, skills, work experience, extracurricular activities, and any other pertinent information that a candidate believes to be illustrating they are best-suited for a particular position. Sometimes this document can be called a Curriculum Vitae (CV). Though these two terms are often used interchangeably, there is a distinct difference between them.

Difference between a resume and curriculum vitae (CV)

The major difference between a resume and curriculum vitae is length.

A resume is generally a concise overview of a person's basic personal information (i.e., name, gender, email, address, etc.) followed by their education, experience, extracurricular activities, hobbies, etc. The ideal length of a resume is generally one or two pages.

A curriculum vitae can be considered a more detailed form of a resume. The resume should be a maximum of two pages, while the curriculum vitae is generally a minimum of two pages. It is a detail-oriented document that consists of personal information, education, work experience, awards, thesis information, presentations, honors, affiliations, hobbies and interests, and other qualifications and skills. These are all written in detail, and present the candidate as the most suitable applicant for the job under consideration.

In Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and most countries of the African continent, employers prefer to receive a detailed account of the candidate; therefore, the curriculum vitae is generally used in these parts of the world. In America however, a resume is more common, while a curriculum vitae is a requirement for certain types of professional employment, such as teaching and researching.

When utilized for the same objective, we can accurately use the terms resume and curriculum vitae interchangeably.

What is a resume template?

A resume template is a document that provides sample resume content and design. This can be used as a model, as it can be copied in order to serve as inspiration and a guideline.

Resume format

There are three resume formats:

  • Functional resume: focuses on skills and qualifications.
  • Chronological resume: focuses on work history.
  • Combination resume: shows both work history and skills.
