How to Make a Contemporary Resume
Follow this step-by-step guide to create a great contemporary resume. Our tips and tricks will help you smooth out all the common mistakes of writing a resume.
1. Determine if a contemporary resume is right for you.
Make sure a contemporary resume is ideal by determining if your job or industry values aesthetics, appearance or design. If your role is creative and cutting-edge, a contemporary resume is appropriate. Some specific jobs that could use a contemporary resume are:
- Marketing
- Public Relations
- Interior Design
- Photography
- Sales
- Graphic Design
- Journalism
- Software Engineering
- Architecture
2. Select the appropriate format.
Your next step should be deciding which resume format will best showcase your skills and experience. A resume format organizes your resume’s information strategically, and there are three types you can choose from chronological, functional and combination.
Generally, a chronological format is best for mid-career professionals who want to highlight their work history, including length of time on jobs, titles held, and company names.
The functional format is a great choice for recent graduates and those without a stable job history to highlight, including those who have had significant employment gaps.
For professionals seeking to change industries or job titles, a combination format may do the best job of highlighting relevant skills and experiences.
Choose the format that you believe would best represent where you’re at in your career. Keep this in mind when you’re selecting the best contemporary template for your needs.
3. Include these key elements.
While there is no single design or layout for contemporary resumes, they have characteristics that make this resume type easy to identify. Here are a few hallmarks of contemporary resume design and structure:
- Creative use of colors and shading to define sections
- A two or three-column layout that allows for a clear division of sections
- Bulleted lists and short sentences are more prominent
- The overall feel is like a newsletter or advertising flyer that highlights your skills, experience, education and objectives in a creative manner
- The inclusion of graphics, meters or charts
- The use of color, graphics and columns create resumes that are a pleasure to view and read
4. Keep your template formatting intact.
When using a downloadable template, be aware that copy-pasting information can ruin the template’s design. Once you download the template to Word, we recommend you always try “pasting without formatting” or patiently type out your resume’s content.
Sometimes, your text might be longer than the filler content on the template. To fit your text into the template, adjust the font size, but do it one single point size at a time.
A typical resume shouldn’t be longer than one page, but that shouldn’t come at the expense of having a small unreadable font. Keep your font size range between 10 and 12 points. Remember, short, concise bullet points are more impactful than long, run-on sentences.
5. Consider adding a photo.
Many contemporary templates offer the option to add a profile photo. Most European countries expect resumes to include a picture of the candidate’s face. However, many corporations in the United States discard resumes with profile photos since it could imply the photo caused a hiring bias.
If your country or industry approves of resumes with profile pictures, follow these guidelines:
- Select a professional facial photo in the exact dimensions and size as the one in the template.
- To replace the photo, double-click the place-holding graphic, and then select “Change Picture” from the pop-up menu. This will open your file system; locate the photo you desire, click it, and hit “Insert.”
6. Include a skills meter.
Skills meters are two-column sections that list skills and, to the right of them, have boxes or other graphics that allow you to select your skill level. They are a great way to show your proficiency in tasks required in your profession. The best way to update a meter on one of our templates is to change the titles to your specific top skills. Then, to change the skill levels, highlight the appropriate area and fill it in with the proper color to demonstrate your skill level.
7. Match your resume template to the company culture.
One way to get your employer’s attention is by matching your resume design to the culture and branding of the company you’re applying to. If you’re applying to a progressive company like Google or Netflix, your resume should show you’re a dynamic, energetic, and creative professional.
If that sounds like your role and industry, any of the templates on this page will be suitable. However, for financial or legal positions, a traditional template is more appropriate.
Contemporary Resume Templates Pros and Cons
Pros
- Eye-catching designs: These resume templates offer the most avant-garde designs that will catch the eye of recruiters. Bold colors, creative formatting, and the option to include photos make these designs appropriate for any show-stopping candidate.
- Maximized use of space: With the liberty to stray from traditional formatting, some of these templates have multiple columns or sidebars. This layout allows you to organize as much of your information as possible while sticking to one page.
- Practical: Contemporary templates are much more in tune with modern employees’ needs. Elements like skill meters and less traditional sections respond to today’s workforce’s many skills, certifications and expertise.
Cons
- ATS risky: Applicant tracking systems (ATS) have difficulty reading unconventional resumes with images or design elements that obstruct or encapsulate text. If you want an ATS-friendly resume template, you should stick to a more simple design.
- Cramped: Because of their design’s ability to organize large amounts of information, some contemporary resumes can seem crowded with lots of text. Having a text-heavy resume can put off recruiters from reading so much information. However, you can temper this by having a good balance between text and white space.

FAQ
What resume template is most successful?
No single resume template will be successful for every candidate and every role. We wish there were a magic formula that guarantees everyone could get a job every single time. Unfortunately, the resume template that will be most successful is the one that best suits your specific needs.
You should keep in mind that choosing the correct resume format is fundamental to have a successful resume. In terms of design, you should consider the most valued qualities in your job. Does your industry value professionalism, boldness, organization? Well, your downloadable resume template should reflect those qualities as well.
What should not be included in a contemporary resume?
As the name suggests, a contemporary resume shouldn’t include any outdated elements. Some old concepts to avoid are the “resume objective” and replace it with a “summary statement.” The resume objective used to be a pretty standard description of a candidate’s education, past roles, and desire to occupy a specific role. A contemporary resume should maximize its opening section by including specific accomplishments, quantifiable achievements and opting for a firm tone.
A common but archaic custom is including the phrase “references available upon request.” This sentence has become redundant and a waste of space in your resume you can replace with valuable information.
Another critical update you should include in your resume is to opt-out of adding your full street address. For security reasons, you should only state your city and state. Your employers can reach you by email instead.
Are these templates ATS-proof?
Our professionally designed builder templates are guaranteed to bypass applicant tracking systems. However, ATS can prove to be tricky. They tend to prefer clean and simple resume designs they can comfortably scan left to right. Resumes with more than one column of text can run the risk of getting jumbled by an ATS. If you want to make sure your template passes the ATS test, check out our ATS resume templates.
What do employers look for in a contemporary resume?
When your resume reaches your employer’s hands, they’ll spend roughly 6 seconds with it. A contemporary resume should have a streamlined design that makes your information easily skimmable. When employers look at a contemporary resume, they want to see a design that evokes your branding as a current professional. A balance of bold colors, a modern font, and creative yet practical formatting are the keys to making a contemporary resume that will impress any employer.
